Celebrating the Ministry of Roger Sizemore
On 29 June 08, Atlanta First Christian had a very special worship service and celebration for the ministry of Rev. Roger Sizemore, PhD. On this day, Roger formally handed the reins to Rick and Kris. This is not the end of our two-year transformational journey; this is merely the end of the beginning.
Welcome to our new Pastors!
Atlanta First Christian is moving into the next phase of our ministry that was begun exactly two years ago -- Pentecost 2006 -- when we called Roger Sizemore to be our Consulting Pastor for Discerning Missional Faithfulness. Over the course of the last two years, we have spent much time in small-group prayer, fellowship, study, and rediscovery of core Christian practices. This was an intentional journey which was essential to discovering the answer to two foundational questions:
- What is God's call on Atlanta First Christian Church?
- How will we, individually and as a congregation, answer that call?
The calling of our new pastors, Rick and Kris Branaman, is not the end of this process; it is merely the next major milestone on the way. We are thrilled to welcome Rick and Kris into our family, and we extend to Roger our grateful appreciation for his faithful stewardship to his call as he's guided us over the last two years. We welcomed the Branamans into our family on Pentecost 2008; pictures here.
Pentecost 2008
In celebration of Pentecost, as well as the diversity of the community we serve,
hear the Lord's Prayer spoken in six languages:
Spanish, German, French, Mandarin Chinese, Hebrew, and Greek.
50th Anniversary of the Atlanta Manifesto
Very rarely is one in the presence of history, and of a figure in that history. We are truly blessed to have as one of our members the Rev. Jim Sosebee, who was one of the signers of the Atlanta Manifesto. A discussion of the historical significance of this document can be found here. Jim took the bold step, while as our pastor in 1957, of ignoring what was popular or safe and doing what was right. On 17 February 2008, we were honored to celebrate the anniversary of this event with Jim and his family; pictures here.
Living the Called Life
Over the next little while, we will be hearing from members of the congregation who have answered a call to some form of ministry. Our stories vary as widely as our life experiences vary -- but hearing these stories is important to helping each of us figure out what it means to first discern God's call on our lives and on our church, and then to live out that call.
Note - the audio clips are fairly large (5-10MB) and may take awhile to download over low-speed links.
Strategic Planning Committee
- The first meeting of the Strategic Planning Committee, charged with putting our Future Story into action, was on Saturday 26 Jan 08. The results of the meeting were presented during worship here. Stay tuned for the full meeting notes (to be posted shortly) as well as subsequent activities of the Committee. (For those who weren't there live in the sanctuary, the "E word" is evangelism.)
What the Churchmice are Up To
Ministry Opportunities at Atlanta First Christian
- Our traditional worship service begins at 11:00am on Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary. Though it's not purely liturgical in nature, it has the customary structural elements of a formal Christian worship service, including the litany of worship, anthems from our Sanctuary Choir, scriptural readings, pastoral Sermon, and weekly celebration of the sacrament of Holy Communion.
- Christian Expresso This is a more contemporary, casual service for those seeking an alternative to a traditional worship service, primarily targeted at the "baby boomer" generation (35-55). The service time is 9:00am to 9:45am on Sunday mornings. Please visit the Expresso website for more details.
- FundaySchool We're also excited about a major upgrade to our children's Sunday School programs. FundaySchool is targeted at pre-K through 6th grade and begins at 9:45am. Please visit the Funday School website for more details.
- Service of Prayer for Hope and Healing is a lay-led service of intercession, fellowship, and prayer held on the first Sunday of the first month of each calendar quarter (please note -- this is a change from last season). This very special service meets in the Sanctuary at 7:00pm. Call or email us for the latest service schedule.
